RK “LIVONIA” – FROM THE BEGINNING TO MANY TITLES AND SUCCESSES

Currently one of the leading rugby clubs not only in Latvia but also in the Baltic region, “Livonia” was founded in 2007by Vigo Valdavs and Jānis Zuments. However, the club's origins date back a bit earlier, as RK “Livonia” was established on the foundation of RK “Laima”. A few years prior, in 2003, former Latvian national team player Vigo Valdavs had started a rugby-7 team for the confectionery factory “Laima” from scratch. The team achieved great success, winning the Latvian Amateur Rugby Club Association Championship three years in a row from 2004 to 2006.

The beginnings of the newly founded RK “Livonia” were gradual. In its first year, the club finished seventh in the Latvian Rugby-7 Championship. However, in the following year (2008), “Livonia” made significant progress and came close to its first medal, finishing fourth in the national Rugby-7 Championship. The team repeated this result a year later, once again narrowly missing a place in the top three.

In 2010, RK “Livonia” achieved its first medal in the national championship when RK “Kurši/Livonia” earned silver, becoming the vice-champions in Rugby-7. In one of the stages of the Latvian Championship, “Livonia” players claimed victory, proving that winning a title in the future was entirely within reach. The year 2010 was also notable for RK “Livonia”’s debut in the Latvian Rugby-15 Championship, where the team finished in seventh place.

In the following year, RK “Livonia” once again secured second place in Rugby-7, successfully defending their vice-champion title. Meanwhile, in their second season of Rugby-15, the team improved their performance significantly, finishing in fourth place and coming very close to their first medals in classic rugby. They repeated this achievement in the following season. Furthermore, the streak of silver medals in Rugby-7 extended to three consecutive years, as “Livonia” once again claimed second place in 2012, defending their vice-champion title yet again.

The year 2013 turned out to be an exceptionally successful one, marking RK “Livonia’s” first “golden year”—a season of championship triumphs in both Rugby-7 and Rugby-15. Under the name “Autowelt/Livonia,” the team excelled and, after three consecutive silver finishes, finally achieved the long-awaited victory in Rugby-7. However, an even more significant accomplishment was the triumph of “Garkalne/Livonia” in Rugby-15, where the team claimed their first-ever medal, and it was gold. Adding to these successes, Upesciems Stadium, the club’s home ground, hosted the European Championship Division B Northern Zone Rugby-7 Tournament that same year.

The following year, 2014, was even more successful, as RK “Livonia” continued to dominate, surpassing all their rivals in both Rugby-15 and Rugby-7. “Garkalne/Livonia” successfully defended their Latvian Rugby-15 Championship title, becoming two-time champions. Additionally, the team won the Latvian Rugby Cup for the first time and also secured the President's Cup, completing a clean sweep of all major domestic titles in classic rugby. In Rugby-7, the success continued as “Huracan/Livonia” defended their champion title and, for the first time, won the Latvian Rugby-7 Cup.

The success-filled year of 2014 was further enriched by achievements in women's rugby. Despite facing more experienced opponents, the U-18 girls’ team “Jaunpiebalga-Garkalne/Livonia” earned a bronze medal in the Latvian Women's Rugby-7 Championship.

In 2015, RK “Garkalne/Livonia” secured second place in the Latvian Rugby-15 Championship, but a year later, the team reclaimed their national championship title, winning first place in Rugby-15 for the second time. Additionally, they successfully defended the President’s Cup for the second consecutive year. A significant milestone in 2015 was achieved in Rugby-7, where, for the first time in history, two club teams earned medals in the Latvian Championship: “Huracan/Livonia” became champions, while the second team, “Garkalne/Livonia,” secured bronze.

The list of achievements didn’t stop there. For the first time, a Livonia youth team won a national title. The “Jaunpiebalga/Garkalne-Livonia” girls’ team, known as the “Black Panthers,” claimed the Latvian U-18 Cup and also reached the final of the Latvian Women’s Cup. A year later, they repeated their Cup success and also won the Latvian U-18 Championship.

Following such accomplishments, the club proudly announced the completion of a full team pyramid across all age groups within its system.

The 2015 championship title enabled RK “Livonia” to make their debut in the European Champions Cup in 2016 in St. Petersburg, where they achieved a respectable seventh place. That same year, Livonia fielded teams in both the Latvian Championship's top and first leagues, winning two bronze medals—one in Rugby-15 through “Livonia/Pērkona vīri” and the other in Rugby-7 with “Livonia/Vidzeme.”

In 2017, RK “Livonia” celebrated its 10th anniversary in grand style, winning the Latvian Rugby-15 Championshipfor the third time and securing their fourth consecutive Rugby-7 title. Over the following years, the team alternated between second-place finishes and championship titles, reaching a total of five Rugby-15 titles by 2021. A sixth titlewas narrowly missed in 2018, despite winning the Latvian Cup and a key regular-season match against RK “Miesnieki”. In the final, they fell short against their arch-rivals. Luck also evaded them in Rugby-7 that year, where “Baltic XL/Livonia” initially won but was later controversially disqualified.

In 2019, “Garkalne/Livonia” debuted in the prestigious Baltic Top League, delivering an impressive performance. The team not only became the best Latvian team but also finished third overall, right behind Lithuanian powerhouses “Vairas-Kalvis-Jupoja” and “Baltrex.” That year was also successful for the women's team “LSPA/Livonia,” who became Latvian Rugby-7 champions and won the Latvian Cup for the third consecutive year. Additionally, they secured second place in the European Club Championship. The U-12 and U-14 youth teams also became Latvian champions, further highlighting the club’s success across all levels.

The year 2022 became historic for RK “Livonia” as they became the first Latvian team to reach the final of the Baltic Top League. After finishing fourth in the regular season, they faced the season's leaders in the semifinals. The path to the final was dramatic, with both matches being fiercely contested. In the end, Livonia narrowly defeated Kaunas “Ąžuolas” by a one-point aggregate difference. Although they fell short in the final during the last ten minutes against “Vairas-Kalvis-Jupoja,” RK “Livonia” delivered a commendable performance and secured a historic second place.

In 2023, RK “AlphaLane/Livonia” had their best-ever regular season in the Baltic Top League, marked by determination and exceptional performance. The team achieved six wins in seven matches, including a historic first victory over the renowned Šiauliai “Baltrex”. This impressive 6-1 record secured them second place and a spot in the semifinals for the second consecutive year. However, injuries to several key players prevented them from advancing, and they finished in fourth place after losing both the semifinal and the bronze medal match.

In the 2023 Latvian Women's Championship, the Livonia women's team once again secured second place, while finishing third in the Latvian Cup. The U-18 youth team excelled, becoming Latvian champions across five tournament stages. The U-10 team dominated in their age group, while the U-14 and U-16 teams earned vice-champion titles.

The Livonia second team participated in the newly established Baltic Championship, finishing in 7th place. Early roster challenges hindered their chances of reaching the semifinals, missing qualification by a single victory. A narrow and hard-fought loss to “Baltrex” reserves in the group stage ultimately decided their fate.

In 2024, RK “Livonia” faced not only sporting challenges but also a legal battle. A conflict in the Baltic Top Leaguewith Lithuanian rugby representatives created a controversial situation. Despite “Baltic XL/Livonia” securing an on-field victory against Šiauliai, the team was handed a technical loss. This decision prevented Livonia from advancing to the semifinals and escalated into an ongoing court case in Lithuania. Despite these obstacles, Livonia remains committed to fair play and the core values of rugby, showcasing their determination and integrity.

In domestic competitions, “Baltic XL/Livonia” achieved a major triumph, becoming the Latvian Rugby-7 Championship winners. Meanwhile, the Livonia women's team narrowly missed the top spot again, securing second place in both the Latvian Championship and the Latvian Cup.

The club's youth teams also brought moments of pride. The U-18 team became Latvian champions, demonstrating their immense potential, while finishing third in the Latvian Cup. The younger teams, U-10 and U-12, delivered outstanding performances, further solidifying Livonia's reputation in youth rugby.

The U-10 teams showcased diverse successes. In the Latvian Championship, LIVONIA/RIGA placed 4th, while LIVONIA/ENGURE finished 6th. In the Latvian Cup, LIVONIA/RIGA earned a 2nd place podium finish, with LIVONIA/ENGURE maintaining their 6th place result.

Meanwhile, the U-12 team LIVONIA/RIGA established themselves among the top Latvian rugby teams, securing 2nd place in both the Latvian Championship and the Latvian Cup.
